How to set up Wifi Tethering Empty How to set up Wifi Tethering

Per Adolfo on the FP Facebook page. Edited from comments below too.

1) Open the "WiFi Tether" app that came stock.
2) Tap the menu key, select "Settings"
3) On the settings screen, change "Change Setup-Method" to "Netd (master)"
4) Uncheck "WiFi-driver reload 2"
5) Check "WiFi-driver reload"
6) Scroll down and select Change LAN, select "172.20.21.0/24"
7) For security, change the SSID, enable WiFi-Encryption, and set the passphrase.

Though not all of these steps may be necessary, they should make it work for anyone.
Good luck!

Some devices like Android tablets do not work with an Ad-Hoc network. Setting the "Change Setup-Method" to 'Netd (master)' will make it visible to any device as a wireless network.

Thanks for the steps, they worked great for me. Only thing I would add is to set up your own SSID so it's easy to tell which WAN is yours, and definitely turn on security unless you have a powerful reason not too. Setting the Method to 'Netd' might also save you troubleshooting headaches should for some reason the 'Auto' setting fail you.

I had one question though, is there any particular reason for choosing "172.20.21.0/24" for the LAN IP, as opposed to the other choices?

172.x.x.x is not used very often for routers, where as 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x seems to be used with everything including cellular providers (my FP phone at the moment has a public IP but my Lycamobile phone as a 10.x.x.x address). It is less likely to cause issues if any addresses are saved on the phone or the connecting device as well. My home network uses 10.x.x.x addresses and I had issues connecting until I did that.

My phone does not appear to have a "wifi tether" app. Would this be the "wifi tethering" app by OpenGarden on the playstore? Thanks.

How to set up Wifi Tethering Empty Re: How to set up Wifi Tethering

Post by jlummel Tue Nov 26, 2013 6:40 pm

I noticed today (Tues Nov 26, 2013) that FP is telling people on their Facebook page that tethering is not supported and they changed their website support FAQ "Can the Freedom Phone act as a hotspot?" to say "The Freedom Phone cannot be used as a hotspot.  We do not support the tethering functionality."

Anyone have the skinny on this?

How to set up Wifi Tethering Empty Unable to tether using steps as mentioned

Post by rgulati Tue Nov 26, 2013 10:20 pm

Hi,

My HTC evo design phone did not come with Tether app. I downloaded and installed the app as it had been given earlier. I also followed the instructions in settings. But my laptop cannot see the SSID.

If I did not have this app before and turn the hot spot on then I could see the SSID and it ask me the password on the connection which I do not have it. I tried default password e.g. freedompop or 123xxx. That did not work.

I also called customer support and they told me that phone does not have hot spot or they do not support. I believe lots of users calling them and asking them. It is easier for them to say NO instead helping everyone for troubleshooting it.

I would appreciate any help in this regards.

Thanks,

rgulati

Double check step 3. If it is not setup as one of the master settings, it will be in Ad-hoc mode and some devices cannot see it.
